She works at El Roble tending bar, driving the airport shuttle (her truck), giving surf lessons and doing tours. ![]() Later we met Kelly, a spunky 30 something year old, from Portland Oregon, a former English Lit teacher who is in the process of moving to El Salvador permanently. She is boning up on her Spanish here and is taking private lessons from a teacher nearby for $5 per hour. We met Claire, an Oregonian, who at 20, has traveled more places than most Americans will in a lifetime. They offer surf lessons, tours and transport around the area and rent bikes. Playa San Diego is more of a neighborhood rather than a town and is favored by Canadians who own homes and stay for the winter as well as San Salvador's elite who have vacation homes here.ĭarren, from the UK, along with his El Salvadoran wife, Seka, run El Roble. Soon we were relaxing in hammocks on the El Roble patio. This hotel has a crystal clear swimming pool, so we know pools can be kept sparkling despite the heat. The buffet had decent fruit, coffee, and eggs but the pancakes, french toast, and the rest, left a bit to be desired. We asked him to drop us in La Libertad and we bee-lined to the $4 breakfast buffet and free wifi at Pacific Sunset hotel. Hostal El Roble Dorm, San Diego, La Libertad Back in El Salvador, he bought a ranch and 30 cows and pays others to do the heavy ranch work while he hauls loads of sugarcane, which is a comparatively easy job. He had to pay hefty alimony and child support which he did for three years before running back to El Salvador. Apparently the wife recanted the abuse accusations but it was too late. His wife and her friends accused him of abusing her and he was taken to jail for three days. "Honest, we were just having lunch" he insisted as he tried to convince us of his innocence. His happy life in the US came to an abrupt end when his wife found him in the cab of his truck with another woman. Reginald was eager to practice his English and we got the story of his life. He said he always stops for Americans and tries to help them because it is a way to repay the kindness of so many Americans who helped him when he lived in the USA. ![]() Reginald was on his way to pick up another load of sugarcane down the coast. Besides, neither of us had ever ridden in the cab of one of those big semi trucks. We were already having a hard day and the temps were getting only hotter, so we gladly accepted. He asked us if we wanted to throw our bikes in the back of his empty truck and skip the ups and downs along the coast. As we approached, a friendly looking guy stepped out and greeted us with a big grin.
